6 Startup Lessons For The Year 2007

If you’ve not already added Read/WriteWeb to your feeds, here’s another reason to: there’s an excellent guest post by Jawad Shuaib on 6 Startup Lessons for 2007 that you should read if you’re building a web based micro-ISV product.

Here’s the lessons, but definitely visit this post for the logic behind the lessons:

  1. Divide and Conquer, Differentiate or Die.
  2. Generally Speaking, the Smaller the Niche, the More Loyal the Users Become.
  3. Focus.
  4. No Small Market is Small Enough.
  5. Mind Numbingly Simple.
  6. Bubble Burps.

Bob,

How do you think Jawad’s call for “mind numbingly simple” e.g. “In a world where startups are as common as ants in the jungle, it is important not to overload the user with information. Complicated user interfaces do not help anybody. It follows that an unfocused startup will undoubtedly complicate things by forcing extra features onto a web page. Users like mindless choices so get rid of the question mark lurking over the user’s head.”

co-exist with Joel’s assertion that “Minimalist aesthetics are quite hip these days. But if you think simplicity means “not very many features” or “does one thing and does it well,” then I applaud your integrity but you can’t go that far with a product that deliberately leaves features out.”:http://joelonsoftware.com/items/2006/12/09.html?

Are they talking about different things? Is Jawad talking to start ups while Joel talking to established efforts?
