47hats gets a new look.
Just in case you’re reading this post via RSS, I wanted to point out 47hats.com is sporting a new look in 2008.
While there’s plenty of workable WordPress themes out there, really professional, highly readable themes that push the envelope are hard to find. So I was very happy when I stumbled upon Michael Pollock’s Solostream Web Studio and his “WordPress Magazine” theme.
I’ve known Michael for years before he started creating WordPress and he very kindly let me use his theme for free (I kind of forgot to mention I was one click away from buying it). If you’re looking for a great new theme for your WordPress blog, definitely check out Solostream.
Solostream is one of the few WordPress template vendors out there who go beyond repurposing standard web site templates. For example, the featured story at the top of the page “just happens” when I make add a post to the featured category. Sweet!
In other news, I’ve been busy dusting off my fedora (that’s a kind of hat reporters used to wear) over at Web Worker Daily. The good side of that is if you’re got a hot microISV product or web service, especially for people who spend nearly as much time on the net as you do, email me at bob@webworkdaily.com.
The bad new is I’ve been bit slack posting here. That will be changing soon, with the return of the Weekly Review (volunteers welcome!), a couple of static resource pages on GTD and blogging and several other things I hope you find interesting and worth your attention. Stay tuned.

Bob,
I hate to say this but I think the home page on 47hats has become way over the top. You’ve added so many Wordpress crosslinking gadgets that its become quite confusing. On my screen the sidebars take up more room than main stories.
The layout used on individual stories is much, much cleaner.
If I was you, I’d put the focus back on the actual content, rather than ‘50 different ways to access my content’.
The content is great and I’m quite happy to read each post as it appears, in chronological order.
Just my two cents. I’d be interested to hear what others think - perhaps it’s just me.
Regards,
Mark.
I agree, it’s hard to tell what is content, versus comments, vs new content, vs navigation.

agreed. I no longer check 47hats.com on a regular basis (I used to).

Ouch! I need to do something about this… Thanks Nate, Mark, Phillip and Todd for your feedback - I appreciate it.
Hi Bob,
I was surprised when I tried to open your new website from my day job work place it was refused by the firewall program (WebMarshal) on our server with the message ‘Access to this website was blocked by the rule Harmful and Stealth’. It turns out that your site is on a black list maintained by http://www.surbl.org.
I just wanted to let you know. There must be somebody out there that really does not like the new look…
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that your logo obscures the main menu on the home page in my browser (Explorerer 7, yes I know, but I really like this browser).

Ger - I think it was a false positive - at least surbi does not list 47hats.com: http://www.rulesemporium.com/cgi-bin/uribl.cgi?domain0=207.176.137.118;bl0=0
Any further info would be greatly appreciated, and I’m trying to get a handle on why oh why IE7 has an issue with this code…
Thanks!
Bob,
go to http://www.rulesemporium.com/cgi-bin/uribl.cgi and type your domain in one of the boxes. This is the result:
47hats.com is 207.176.137.118 [ rbl lookup ]
domain registered: unknown [ full whois ]
RBL: skipping uri lookups on ip-based RBLs
URIBL: multi.surbl.org: listed [Blocked, 47hats.com on lists [ob], See: http://www.surbl.org/lists.html
URIBL: multi.uribl.com: not listed [ report ]
It undoubtly says you are listed, reason for our server (WebMarshal) to block it. Just wanted to let you know.
IE7 problem with the logo has disappeared.
